If you know me, then you know I’m always down to raise awareness for a worthy cause. This time it’s for the #ALSIceBucketChallenge, a fundraising and educational campaign about ALS (“amyotrophic lateral sclerosis” or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”).
ALS is a progressive neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles paralyzed. The disease is currently without cure or effective treatment, and according to ALS Canada, it takes the lives of two or three Canadian every day.
I am thankful and lucky that ALS has not touched my life. This is me doing my part in supporting the #icebucketchallenge movement.
Thank you to Christopher Poon for nominating me. In turn, I nominate Karen Cheng, Jamie Lee and Laura Tuovinen.
Finally, a shout out to everyone who has made a donation to support ALS research and client care. Every dollar makes a difference, and you are giving not only help but also hope. Cheers!
My beautiful friend Jamie Lee (李汶蔚) is in the running for Miss Hong Kong!!! She was also in the top 10 for Miss Chinese Vancouver two years ago (2012), because she’s just that awesome (and gorgeous, and smart, and devoted to her goals). Friends of Tumblr, please support her, she’s number 8 in this competition :) (instructions below)*
For those who don’t know Jamie, she’s a graduate from the University of British Columbia (like me) and for the past year she’s been travelling the world with Cathay Pacific as a flight attendant! She and I were co-directors of the World Vision UBC events team in 2009 and since then we’ve stayed the best of partners :’) She unfailingly seeks me out whenever she lands in Vancouver despite her limited time. She is one of my most honest, creative and hilarious friends and I can’t wait to eat a giant slice of cake with her the next time she’s in town!
(Below: her and I in 2010, at a World Vision UBC dessert night event where we met the CEO of World Vision Canada, Dave Toycen!)
(Below: Jamie showing me around Lan Kwai Fong when I visited Hong Kong in 2011!)
So, please support Jamie Lee by eliminating everyone else in the competition. Seriously. Do NOT vote #8! ;) Much love to you all <3
*Voting instructions from Jamie herself:
http://misshk.tvb.com/2014/funvoting/ There’s only two days left until the semi final! This time the voting system is a bit scary because it’s an elimination round. Help me by downloading the app called “TVB Fun” and pick 1-3 contestants to be eliminated during the semi final. (I’m #8, don’t pick!! ) You can submit as many times until August 24 (Sunday) at around 9pm but only the last submitted vote will be counted. (Meaning you can change your votes) For friends in Vancouver, that would be 6am on Sunday. Please don’t vote me out because the final is really cool and I still want to be in the running for the title of Miss Hong Kong 2014! Thanks everyone!!
Good luck, Jamie!!!
(Below: last time Jamie visited Vancouver on May 1, 2014 and we hung out in Yaletown. It was a sunny day :)
“Remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it totally. If you want to take responsibility for your life, you must choose one of these three options, and you must choose now. Then accept the consequences. No excuses. No negativity. No psychic pollution. Keep your inner space clear.”
“There are pleasures to be had from books beyond being lightly entertained. There is the pleasure of being challenged; the pleasure of feeling one’s range and capacities expanding; the pleasure of entering into an unfamiliar world, and being lead into empathy with a consciousness very different from one’s own; the pleasure of knowing what others have already thought it worth knowing, and entering a larger conversation.”
"You must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. Thoreau said, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." Don’t be resigned to that. Break out!"
Please, don’t worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day… make a wish and think of me. Make your life spectacular. I know I did.
